Going 'green' is no bull for Vickers

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — The NASCAR garage area is filled with snorting 850-horsepower engines that get five miles per gallon on a good day and gruff crew guys who sip coffee out of one plastic foam cup and spit tobacco juice into another. It’s not the most likely environment for an environmentalist. But that doesn’t stop NASCAR driver Brian Vickers from talking up the potential of hydrogen-powered passenger cars or calling out political figures for spending so much time on sports when they should be tackling big issues like global warming."Congress, unfortunately, has made more progress on steroids in baseball and the Patriots, whether they’re taping NFL games, than they have on global climate change, the war, economic recession and a budget that’s out of control," Vickers said.

Car Wars: 'Forza' Outclasses Its Competition On The Racetrack

Just a few years ago, it was somewhat of a surprise when a NASCAR driver said he used video games to get ready for real-life races. Nowadays, virtual racing is a standard element of the training regimen of professional drivers, particularly the young guns who probably learned to drive on a Nintendo long before they got behind the wheel of a stock car.

Elliott Sadler, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Kyle Busch and Carl Edwards are just a few of the NASCAR drivers who have acknowledged a debt to video games. As graphics get more realistic, a virtual track can provide good practice for the pros while letting the rest of us feel what's it's like to do a few laps at Daytona.

-''NASCAR 08'' (EA Sports, for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, $59.99; PlayStation 2, $39.99): The first 360/PS3 version of this franchise includes vivid recreations of just about every track in America, from the basic oval at Bristol, Tenn., to the twisting road course at Watkins Glen, N.Y.

John Steffensen accused of parking in a 'disabled spot'

HE'S been warned to "walk it, not talk it" on the track, after an alleged verbal attack on Olympics golden girl Glynis Nunn-Cearns last month.

But Sydney sprinter John Steffensen wasn't doing any walking yesterday - and left the talking to his manager after a witness claimed he illegally parked his Porsche in a disabled parking spot.

The 400m Commonwealth Games medallist was identified by an off-duty policeman as the driver of a silver sports car that stopped outside a Boronia Park shopping strip about 11.30am yesterday.

Despite allegedly being flagged away from the disabled space by the officer, who declined to be named, Steffensen is said to have parked his luxury vehicle and run inside a nearby chemist.

According to the witness, a disabled driver who arrived soon after was had to park several metres away in an able-bodied space.

Licence plate sells for $15m

THE super rich in the United Arab Emirates are bidding millions of dollars for out-of-the-ordinary car licence plates as the Gulf state basks in an oil-driven economic boom.

One businessman forked out a record $US14 million ($15 million) on Saturday for a licence plate at a charity auction in the UAE capital of Abu Dhabi.

"It is not huge compared to my family's fortune,'' Saeed Abdel Ghaffar Khouri told AFP after he bid 52.2 million dirhams ($15 million) for an Abu Dhabi licence plate bearing the single number "1''.

"The price is fair. After all, who among us does not want to be number one?'' asked Mr Khouri, whose fortune was made in real estate and stocks.

Asked what he planned to do with the licence plate, the twenty-something said he would frame it and mount it on a wall rather than attach it to a car.

Deutsche Bank, The Nasdaq Stock Market, Inc., The New York Times ...

The New York Times Company is also developing a sophisticated blog reader on Adobe AIR.

ShifD solves the problem of shifting data between all of a users Web-enabled devices, said Michael Zimbalist, vice president, research & development operations, The New York Times Company. We see a future for device-independent media, with convergence around the user experience and not around any particular delivery platform, which is why Adobe AIR is an excellent choice for ShifD.

Other companies using Adobe Flex and Adobe AIR to create and deploy RIAs on the desktop include: Atlantic Records; BBC; Business Objects, an SAP company; Deutsche Bank; FedEx Corp.; Loyalty Management Group (Nectar); Nickelodeon/MTVN Kids and Family Groups Neopets and Wilson Sporting Goods.

Particide in Six Easy Steps: Diligent Democrats Demonstrate Dumbness ...

If Democrats want to rub themselves out this year, they may need a seventh.

Get on their knees and beg the public not to vote for them? Nah. Too subtle.

Change their name to the Socialist Party? Nah. It might actually increase their share of votes.

Have their own sex scandals? Nah. Been there, done that.

Something else is going to be required to kill the party off for sure this year.

Oh, I know! They could nominate Hillary Clinton!
