Scion xB MotorWeek's 'Best'

CHICAGO, Feb. 6 (UPI) -- The boxy Scion xB compact utility vehicle was named the "Best of the Year" by MotorWeek Wednesday at the 100th Chicago Auto Show.

Toyota's youth brand aimed the xB squarely at Gen Y but the roomy, car-like vehicle became a favorite of their Baby Boomer parents attracted by its versatility, affordability and fuel-efficiency.

MotorWeek, television's first auto magazine, also choose the Scion xB as "Best Small Car" in its annual Drivers' Choice Awards.

"Our Scion owners asked for a bigger and better box and we responded with the 2008 xB," said Scion Vice President Jack Hollis.

The Honda Accord was "Best Family Sedan," the Dodge Grand Caravan/Chrysler Town & Country "Best Minivan," Chrysler Sebring "Best Convertible," Mercedes-Benz C-Class "Best Luxury Sedan," Cadillac CTS "Best Sport Sedan" and Volkswagen R32 "Best Performance Car."

"The Nissan Rogue was "Best Small Utility," Chevrolet Tahoe/GMC Yukon "Best Large Utility," Buick Enclave/GMC Acadia/Saturn Outlook "Best Crossover Utility, Ford F-150 "Best Pickup," and the Chevy Tahoe Hybrid/GMC Yukon Hybrid "Best Eco-Friendly."

The Audi R8, Bentley Continental GT Speed and Lexus LS 600h L were MotorWeek's "Best Dream Machine."

With a small and efficient petrol or diesel engine the Naro car would be capable of up to 2.8litres/100km (100mpg), though the design leaves open the option for installing a new-generation fuel cell engine running on hydrogen. Something that is immediately apparent from the concept illustrations is how tall the vehicle is, especially in comparison with other narrow vehicles that have been proposed.
"The trouble with most narrow cars is that the engineers get hold of it," states Harty. "This results in a very low seating position to keep the centre of gravity low and make it easier to engineer. But nobody wants to be sitting low down in traffic."
The operative of a Naro car will have an eye-line at a height of about 1.5 to 1.6m, which is very similar to that on a sports motorcycle (the concept was based around the Honda Blackbird Harty owned at the time) and, surprisingly, the eye-line when standing upright.

BMW HAND KLIEN F1 LIFELINE

Christian Klien is set to spend another season in F1 after BMW announced that he would be their 2008 test driver along with Marko Asmer.

Having parted ways with Honda at the end of last year, Klien had hoped to land a race-seat with the Force India outfit. However, that went to Giancarlo Fisichella, leaving the Austrian without a drive.

It didn't take him long though to find a new job with BMW announcing on Saturday that they had signed him as one of their two test drivers for this year's championship.

"We wanted a third driver with Formula One racing experience," said BMW Motorsport director Mario Theissen, "as well as an up-and-coming young driver for us to train up to Formula One level.

"With Christian we have signed on a driver who is familiar with the format of a grand prix weekend and can step into the breach right away should one of our team drivers have to back out.

George off to Japan in pursuit of unification

Semantics aside, what IRL and Champ Car officials are talking about is unifying the sport of open-wheel auto racing in this country. But make no mistake: If there is to be one series, it will be governed by and promoted as the Indy Racing League's IndyCar Series, which Tony George formed in 1996 and still owns. Terry Angstadt and Brian Barnhart preside over the league's commercial and competition divisions, respectively.

2. What about equipment?
The IRL uses cars made by Dallara, an Italian company, powered by Honda engines with Firestone tires. Since Champ Car's equipment is different and wouldn't be transferable, George has offered to help all viable teams make the switch by providing equipment. Also, the IRL will pay out a minimum of $1.2 million in purse money to teams for each car that competes in the full race schedule.

De Ferran launches Honda ALMS team

Gil de Ferran has long enjoyed strong links with Honda, serving for a time as the sporting director of the Honda F1 programme. Now he is to run his own operation in the United States, preparing a fourth Acura sports car for the American Le Mans Series. The car will be campaigned under the de Ferran Motorsports banner, a newly formed team owned by the former Indianapolis 500 winner and two-time CART Champ Car champion.

Gil will also return to driving as one of the team's drivers.

Honda offshoot Acura entered sports car racing last year with cars for Andretti Green Racing, Highcroft Racing and Lowe’s Fernandez Racing, the first factory motorsports programme in Acura’s 20-year history.

-I am very sick today, so I don't feel the need to type for very long right now. But, I will make this simple and clear for when I get on later tonight and give my list. Who do you think will get the go-ahead for a top five team to start the 2008 season? Don't be predictable and go with what the media thinks. Go by who you think should be listed up there at the top when the first AP poll comes out in mid-summer. Go ahead, comment and give your thoughts aswell. And I will be on later when I get some of this sickness away and give my reasons. Your Pre-season Top 5? -Kris- .

Citizenship applicants fear delays imperil vote

For the 25 Hispanic immigrants taking a citizenship class Tuesday evening in downtown Houston, voting is a fundamental right they hope to gain.

The students, attending the nonprofit Houston International University inside a shopping center, answered enthusiastically as their instructor quizzed them on American history and civics topics they must know to pass a citizenship test.

They are part of an unprecedented nationwide surge of 1.4 million legal immigrants who applied for U.S. citizenship in the 2007 fiscal year. But now many of those immigrants fear a bureaucratic backlog may prevent them from becoming citizens in time to vote in this year's presidential elections.

''Maybe if I pass the exam and become a citizen, I can vote," said Antonia Landeros, a 38-year-old Mexican immigrant who works for a Houston janitorial firm.

What to do when the wife gets fat

I hate my FUPA (Fat Upper Pussy Area) as much as you. Its feeling upon my legs makes me wretch. I've already lost three pounds and I will get better; I have nowhere to go but up. (And you have yet to go down, har har.) But how did I get into this sorry state? Well, once upon a time, we shared parenting and chores. You valued my work as a mother. Then you lost your job, no fault of yours, and you wanted to go back to school. My blessing. But the fact is, the strain of parenting alone, carrying the mortgage, and being a loving, available GGG fucktoy can be hard on a girl. But like the enduring lady I am, I happily read the kids one more story and assure them that you'll see them briefly tomorrow—after all, you've got hot, cute 20-year-olds to study with and plump your middle-aged ego.

Here's the danger, though: these girls, your classmates, may convince you that you are still the hot, cute punk-rawk skater guy you dream of being again.

Struggling Motorola finds hope with new CEO

Zander's downfall can be summed up in seven words: lack of innovation and slow to market, analysts and industry watchers say.

"I've followed Motorola for the past 15 years, and they've had the same underlying problems with efficiency and speed," said Paul Sagawa, an analyst with Sanford Bernstein.

Motorola has struggled to find an innovative replacement for its popular ultra thin Razr. The Razr still sells fairly well for a 3-year-old phone, but rivals like Samsung and LG Electronics have rolled out their own slim, thin phones while Motorola has failed to come up with anything that has resonated with the public to the same degree.

That problem was compounded by Motorola's slow entry into the 3G, or third generation, market, as Samsung and LG introduced several 3G phones early in the year for use over next generation wireless networks.
